NEWS RELEASE
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia will convene Wednesday, April 1, at the West Virginia University College of Law in Morgantown to hear oral arguments in three cases.
“Our Court’s annual visit to hear arguments at the WVU College of Law is a tremendous opportunity for students to experience the appellate process firsthand,” said Chief Justice C. Haley Bunn. “In addition to allowing students to witness arguments, this visit also gives the justices an opportunity to meet West Virginia’s newest generation of legal scholars. We give the students a chance to interact with us and ask questions, and we hope the experience helps guide them as they prepare to embark on their careers. The relationship between the Court and our State’s only law school is unique and rewarding for both the students and the justices.”
The Court will convene at 10 a.m. in the Marlyn E. Lugar Courtroom. The event is free and open to the public and media. Doors open at 9 a.m. and attendees are asked to be seated by 9:50 a.m.
“At WVU, law students don’t have to travel far to witness the highest levels of legal practice,” said Susan Brewer, interim dean of the WVU College of Law. "We’re thrilled to host the Supreme Court of Appeals and grateful that they're giving our community the chance to watch them work. The lessons our students learn from this visit will stay with them for the rest of their professional lives.”
The justices will conduct a general question-and-answer period with WVU law students then hear three cases on Wednesday’s docket:
- 10:00 a.m.: 20-minute Q&A with WVU law students.
- 10:20 a.m., Case No. 24-16: State of West Virginia v. James Dee McKinney AKA 1227
- 10:40 a.m., Case No. 24-82: Wayne White, et al. v. City of Parkersburg
