NEWS RELEASE
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia, in cooperation with the West Virginia State Bar’s Women in the Profession Committee, will host the 2026 Law Day contest awards ceremony beginning at 1 p.m. Friday, May 1, in the Supreme Court Courtroom at the state Capitol in Charleston.
Established in 1958 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Law Day celebrates the Rule of Law and encourages a deeper understanding of the legal system. The theme is set annually by the American Bar Association. This year the theme is “The Rule of Law and the American Dream.”
The West Virginia State Bar’s Law Day Contest for Students is open to students in grades K-12. Now in its sixth year, the contest has seen entries from every grade level and every corner of the state.
The contest invites submissions in any of five categories: digital art, poster, essay, poem or original song. Members of the Women in the Profession Committee judge entries and select contest winners.
During Friday’s event, justices will recognize first, second and third place winners across the five categories in elementary, middle and high school age groups. Three overall winners will also be announced, and several students have been invited to display their posters or artwork, perform their original songs or read their poetry.
The event will begin at 1 p.m. and will be livestreamed on the Supreme Court’s YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@wvsupremecourt.
