Justice Bunn to Serve as Chief Justice Through June 2027

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia today announced Justice C. Haley Bunn has been designated to serve as chief justice for 18 months beginning on Jan. 1, 2026, and continuing through June 30, 2027, as the Court transitions the chief justice’s rotation from a calendar year to fiscal year basis. 

“I am honored to have been entrusted by my colleagues to serve as chief justice and lead the judicial branch over the next year and a half,” Justice Bunn said. 

Supreme Court Sets 2026 Interest Rate on Judgments and Decrees

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Administrative Office of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia today announced it has set the interest rate for judgments and decrees entered during the 2026 calendar year at 6.25 percent. 

West Virginia Code § 56-6-31 requires the Administrative Office to annually determine the interest rate to be paid upon judgments or decrees for the payment of money. 

Supreme Court, Program Graduates to Present Family Treatment Court Overview

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Members and staff of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia, along with three program graduates, will provide a one-hour presentation on the operations and benefits of Family Treatment Courts at noon Tuesday, Jan. 13, in the House of Delegates Chamber at the state Capitol.

Lawmakers, media and members of the public are invited to attend the presentation in the House Chamber. It will also livestreamed on the Legislature’s website at https://www.wvlegislature.gov/live.cfm.

New Cabell Circuit Judge Investiture Scheduled

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – David D. Amsbary will be sworn in as Cabell County’s newest circuit judge in a public investiture ceremony at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, in Courtroom One in the Cabell County Courthouse in Huntington.

Gov. Patrick Morrisey appointed Judge Amsbary to the Sixth Judicial Circuit (Cabell County) on Dec. 5, 2025, to fill the vacancy left by the retirement of Judge Paul T. Farrell. Judge Amsbary was officially sworn into office on Dec. 31, 2025, by Circuit Court Judge Chad Lovejoy in order to begin work on Jan. 1, 2026.

Justice Titus Investiture Ceremony Scheduled Jan. 21

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Justice Gerald M. Titus III will be publicly sworn in to the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia during a formal investiture ceremony at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, in the Supreme Court Courtroom at the state Capitol.

Justice Titus was appointed on Nov. 21, 2025, by Gov. Patrick Morrisey to fill the seat vacated by Justice Tim Armstead, who passed away in August. Justice Titus was officially sworn in to office during a private ceremony on Dec. 12 in order to begin work ahead of the Court’s spring term which began this week.
